Dr. Sherman Canapp is an internationally recognized veterinary orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist, regarded as a leader in canine performance medicine, minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery, and regenerative orthopedic care. He is known for advancing the diagnosis and treatment of complex soft tissue and orthopedic injuries and osteoarthritis in canine athletes and highly active companion dogs.

He is the founder of The Athletic Dog, a platform created to help sporting and active dogs achieve peak performance, prevent injury, and maintain long-term orthopedic health, while also providing a direct pathway to advanced orthopedic and soft tissue clinical care when needed.

Leadership in Canine Orthopedics & Sports Medicine

In 2006, Dr. Canapp co-founded the Veterinary Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Group (VOSM), one of the first specialty hospitals in the United States dedicated exclusively to orthopedic surgery, sports medicine, and rehabilitation for dogs. His work helped pioneer an integrated model of care focused on precise diagnosis, getting answers for hard to diagnose conditions, minimally invasive arthroscopic diagnostics and treatment, and safe return to performance.

Dr. Canapp has authored over 50 scientific publications and is a frequently invited lecturer and workshop leader at major national and international conferences, including the ACVS Surgery Summit, VMX (NAVC), Western Veterinary Conference (WVC), ESVOT (Europe), BVOA (UK) and international sports medicine programs throughout the USA. Europe, Asia, and Australia.

Clinically, Dr. Canapp maintains a bi-coastal practice, providing in-person orthopedic and sports medicine care at The Sams Clinic in Mill Valley, California and HART for Animals in Oakland, Maryland. His work focuses on diagnosing and treating complex and often difficult-to-diagnose soft tissue and orthopedic injuries, osteoarthritis, in particularly in performance, working, and sporting dogs. He is known internationally for diagnosing and treating forelimb injuries especially of the canine elbow and shoulder.

His canine clinical research includes:

  • Canine soft tissue and orthopedic injuries (shoulder, elbow)

  • Osteoarthritis diagnosis and management

  • Regenerative medicine (HA, PRP, BMAC, ADSC stem cell therapies)

  • Advanced intra-articular therapies

  • Objective gait analysis

Orthopedic & Sports Medicine Innovation

Dr. Canapp is the President and CEO of Orthobiologic Innovations, LLC (OBI), a company focused on clinical trials and bringing treatments available to humans and horses into the canine space. The company has designed, developed, clinically tested, and rolled out orthopedic and regenerative medicine devices including widely-used Everost LibertyLock TPLO plates, regenerative medicine preparation devices such as the Companion Animal Health CRT PRP/BMAC preparation machine, and the Trice Medical needlescope for minimally-invasive canine diagnostics and treatment.

Dr. Canapp serves on the Board of Directors for HART for Animals and on the Board of Trustees for Johns Hopkins Medicine – Howard County General Hospital.
